Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 End of Support: Why Migrate to Exchange Online Now
Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019 left mainstream and extended support in October 2025. Microsoft offered a paid Extended Security Update program as a bridge, and that program ends in October 2026 with no further extension announced. After that, on-premises servers receive no security patches at all, which matters because Exchange Server has been one of the most targeted workloads in recent years.
Your options are Exchange Server Subscription Edition, which keeps mail on-premises under a subscription and still requires hardware, patching, and backups, or Exchange Online, which removes that infrastructure entirely and unlocks Defender for Office 365, Purview compliance, and Copilot-ready data. For most UAE and US organizations, the economics and the security posture favor Exchange Online, with a small hybrid footprint retained only where legacy applications need on-premises SMTP relay. How long does an Exchange Online migration take?
A cutover migration for up to 150 mailboxes typically completes in two to three weeks including planning and DNS changes. Will users experience email downtime during the migration?
No business-hours downtime is expected. With hybrid coexistence or pre-staged synchronization, mail continues to flow to the old system until the final switch, which we schedule outside working hours; users typically only need to restart Outlook.
What is the difference between cutover, staged, and hybrid migration?
Cutover moves all mailboxes at once and suits organizations under roughly 150 users. Staged moves mailboxes in batches from older Exchange versions. Hybrid connects on-premises Exchange and Exchange Online as one organization, allowing gradual moves, shared free/busy, and long-term coexistence.
Which Microsoft 365 plans include Exchange Online?

Do we need SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for Exchange Online?
Yes. SPF and DKIM authenticate your outbound mail, and DMARC tells receiving systems what to do with mail that fails. Major mailbox providers now require authentication for bulk senders, and without DMARC your domain can be spoofed in phishing campaigns against your own staff and customers.
Can you migrate Google Workspace to Exchange Online?
