What Is Data Governance and Compliance?

Data governance is how an organization classifies, protects, retains and disposes of its information. Compliance proves that those controls meet laws and standards such as UAE PDPL, Saudi PDPL, GDPR and ISO 27001.

This expertise drives our governance, risk and compliance services and Microsoft Purview compliance setup.

Why Data Governance Matters Now

Data protection laws in the UAE and Saudi Arabia now carry real penalties. Customers and regulators expect proof that personal and sensitive data is controlled.

AI tools such as Copilot also surface any data users can access. Good governance keeps sensitive files out of the wrong answers.

Compliance & Data Governance FAQs

Data governance is the framework of policies, roles and tools that decide how data is classified, protected, retained and deleted across an organization.

Microsoft Purview is Microsoft’s data security, governance and compliance platform. It includes sensitivity labels, DLP, retention, eDiscovery and audit.

UAE PDPL applies to organizations that process personal data in the UAE, outside of free zones with their own laws such as DIFC and ADGM.

The Saudi Personal Data Protection Law, enforced by SDAIA, governs how organizations collect and process personal data of individuals in Saudi Arabia.

Copilot can only reach data users already access. Labels, DLP and permission clean-up stop sensitive content from appearing in AI responses.

A core rollout of labels, DLP and retention typically takes six to twelve weeks, including pilots and user training.
